Hummingbird Tattoos

tattoo designs

Although hummingbird tattoos have no set in stone symbolism, they may very well have an almost proverbial meaning of gathering joy from ‘burying our noses in, and inhaling all the sweetness of life.’ Hummingbirds themselves are a totem of clarity for many, as these tiny and beautiful birds ‘get to the heart of a matter,’ just as they get directly to the heart of a flower.

Hummingbird tattoos can come in a variety of shapes and colors. There are over 300 different types of hummingbirds, so you have quite a few to pick from. For instance, there is the black chinned hummingbird, which has a black head and white or brown body. This would be great to use for a more noir piece; a monotone bird flitting away in the air, its long beak pressed into a scarlet red tulip. Three more colorfully striking examples are the blue chinned sapphire, which is a salient blue-green hue; the purple throated mountain gem, which also sports the same sapphiric coloring, but has streaks of light purple over its body; and lastly, the purple throated woodstar. This particular hummingbird strikes a perfect balance between modest and bold; its body and chest are usually black and white, while its throat is, indeed, a deep, royal purple.

Although most hummingbird tattoos depict the bird plunging itself into the bud of a flower, there are several other poses and styles that can be utilized to create a beautiful picture with this design. The fascination that many of us hold for the creature is its unusual style of flight, and your tattoo can show this, either in a stationary position (as in a quickly taken snapshot), or show the body of the hummingbird with what appears to be many sets of wings. The latter image will be a depiction of the speed in which the wings move. You may also show the hummingbird at rest, sitting peacefully on a branch, its famous wings at its sides.

Despite, or maybe even because of, the fact that hummingbird tattoos do not have a set symbolism of their own, they make for an excellent design. You can assign whatever meaning you so choose to this image, and what’s more, have a beautiful piece of art to go with it.

Wolves seem to have a dual nature; aggressive and soothing, devoted and independent. They also have many mythological stories and beliefs attached to them. For these reasons, wolf tattoos have become a very desirable piece of art.

Although the type of wolf tends to vary for each clan, many Native American tribes use the wolf as a symbol of intellect and guidance. Wolf tattoos featuring a man being led through a harsh desert to his destiny by a large and splendorous wolf may be a great way to depict this variety of meaning. For several tribes, the wolf is said to be seen in the star of Sirius. A great representation of this would be to use a vague outline of a wolf in profile with a bright, bursting blue or orange star for an eye.

Two interesting mythological ties that can be used in wolf tattoos are that of the Celtic myth of the wolf greedily ingesting the sun, and the Roman myth of Romulus and Remus being nurtured by a mother wolf. For the Celtic version, one can show either a full body, or bust of a wolf not only staring defiantly into, but drinking down a soft, and almost fluidic sun. For the Roman myth, you can depict the warm and inviting figure of a drowsy, yet protective female wolf wrapped gently around two small infants. This design may also be used by loving parents to symbolize their bond with their children.

Although most wolf tattoos show the more peaceful side of this animal, others like to express their aggressive side. These tattoos may show the angry appearance of a wolf, bearing its teeth and either rigid in a warning stance, or seeming to almost burst through the skin. Another example of this would be the werewolf. Known for their vicious tendencies, this depiction of ‘man turned beast’ may be shown stalking the streets of a city on a moonlit night. They may also show the transformation between man and wolf.

Though wolf tattoos are sometimes used as an expression of a bold, and forceful spirit, most of them represent cultural or familial ties. These designs are often meant to show the love and respect of both people and nature alike.

Wolf Tattoos

tattoo designsFor many people, dolphin tattoos may symbolize several things; wisdom, freedom and even a love for the open waters. Women and men everywhere are beginning to take a great liking to this design, especially those who have an affinity for the ocean and all the life within it.

One of the most popular images for dolphin tattoos is the appearance of a dolphin leaping forth from a spray of water. One interesting variation to this device is giving a portion of the skin the look of an undulating body of water, while the head of the dolphin appears to push its way through the surface.

Dolphin tattoos may also showcase an assortment of symbols and patterns. Rather than using realistic waves, you can include blue tribal designs, or even scrollwork waves. There is a variety of symbolism that can be used, such as dolphins encircling a globe within a tide pool; bicolored dolphins enmeshed to create a yin yang symbol; or even a Celtic knot, with three tails joined in the center. Boldly colored dolphins can also create a unique heart emblem, with fins meeting, bodies curved and noses touching in the appearance of a kiss.

Dolphin tattoos are frequently seen in a cartoon style. However, some people prefer to use a more realistic approach and create something akin to a portrait. For those with a more scientific interest, recreating the anatomical structure that can be seen in nearly any marine biology book may make for a unique take on dolphin tattoos. The divergent skeletal structure of these creatures may also make for an interesting twist on both dolphin and skeletal tattoos.

Given that many people get dolphin tattoos because of a personal bond or attraction they feel with them, you may also use the ‘man and beast’ style of art. This could be depicted as a human swimming in step with this mammal, or the fusion of the swimming man with the dolphin; either man becoming dolphin, or vice versa.

So whether your fondness for this design is due to aesthetic interest, or it is because of a more personal link, dolphin tattoos will show your engaging spirit and remain a reminder to enjoy your life and your freedom.
